I am Vertical

But I would rather be horizontal.
I am not a tree with my root in the soil
Sucking up minerals and motherly love
So that each March I may gleam into leaf,
Nor am I the beauty of a garden bed
Attracting my share of Ash and spectaculary painted,
Unknowing I must soon unpetal.
Compared with me, a tree is immortal
And a flower- head not tall, but more startling,
And I want the one´s longevity and the other´s daring.

Tonight, in the infinitesimal light of the stars,
The trees and flowers have been strewing their cool odors.
I walk among them, but none of them are noticing.
Sometimes I think that when I am sleeping
I must most perfectly resemble them--
Thoughts gone dim.
It is more natural to me, lying down.
Then the sky and I are in open conversation,
And I shall be useful when I lie down finally:
Then the trees may touch me for once, and the flowers have time for me.

Yo soy vertical

Pero preferiría ser horizontal.
Yo no soy el árbol con mi raíz en el suelo
Chupando minerales y amor materno
Y yo quiero esa longevidad y aquella bravura.

Lady Lazarus

I have done it again.
One year in every ten
I manage it--

A sort of walking miracle, my skin
Bright as a Nazi lampshade,
My right foot

A paperweight,
My face a featureless, fine
Jew linen.

Peel off the napkin
O my enemy.
Do I terrify?--

The nose, the eye pits, the full set of teeth?
The sour breath
Will vanish in a day.

Soon, soon the flesh
The grave cave ate will be
At home on me

And I a smiling woman.
I am only thirty.
And like the cat I have nine times to die.

This is Number Three.
What a trash
To annihilate each decade.

What a million filaments.
The peanut-crunching crowd
Shoves in to see

Them unwrap me hand and foot--
The big strip tease.
Gentlemen, ladies

These are my hands
My knees.
I may be skin and bone,

Nevertheless, I am the same, identical woman.
The first time it happened I was ten.
It was an accident.

The second time I meant
To last it out and not come back at all.
I rocked shut

As a seashell.
They had to call and call
And pick the worms off me like sticky pearls.

Dying
Is an art, like everything else.
I do it exceptionally well.

I do it so it feels like hell.
I do it so it feels real.
I guess you could say I´ve a call.

It´s easy enough to do it in a cell.
It´s easy enough to do it and stay put.
It´s the theatrical

Comeback in broad day
To the same place, the same face, the same brute
Amused shout:

´A miracle!´
That knocks me out.
There is a charge

For the eyeing of my scars, there is a charge
For the hearing of my heart--
It really goes.

And there is a charge, a very large charge
For a word or a touch
Or a bit of blood

Or a piece of my hair or my clothes.
So, so, Herr Doktor
So, Herr Enemy.

I am your opus,
I am your valuable,
The pure gold baby

That melts to a shriek.
I turn and burn.
Do not think I underestimate your great concern.

Ash, ash--
you poke and stir.
Flesh, bone, there is nothing there--

A cake of soap,
A wedding ring,
A gold filling.

Herr God, Herr Lucifer
Beware
Beware.

Out of the ash
I rise with my red hair
And I eat men like air.

A ver, Herr Doktor
A ver, Herr Enemigo.

Soy tu opus,
Tu tesoro,
El bebé de puro oro

Que se disuelve en un chillido
Me vuelvo y ardo
No crea que subestimo su enorme celo.

Cenizas, cenizas-
Tú revuelves y atizas.
Carne, hueso, no hay nada ahí-

Una pastilla de jabón,
Un anillo de boda,
Un empaste de oro.

Herr Dios, Herr Lucifer,
Ojo
Ojo.

Renacida de las cenizas
Subo con mi cabello rojo
Y como al aire sorbo hombres.

Kindness

Kindness glides about my house.
Dame Kindness, she is so nice!
The blue and red jewels of her rings smoke
In the windows, the mirrors
Are filling with smiles.

What is so real as the cry of a child?
A rabbit´s cry may be wilder
But it has no soul.
Sugar can cure everything, so Kindness says.
Sugar is a necessary fluid,

Its crystals a little poultice.
O kindness, kindness
Sweetly picking up pieces!
My Japanese silks, desperate butterflies,
May be pinned any minute, anesthetized.

And here you come, with a cup of tea
Wreathed in steam.
The blood jet is poetry,
There is no stopping it.
You hand me tho children, two roses.

*

Amabilidad

¡Oh amabilidad, amabilidad
Juntando delicadamente las piezas!
Mis sedas japonesas, mis apenadas mariposas,
Puede que sean clavadas por momentos, aletargadas.

Y aquí estás tú, con una taza de té
Cubierta de vaho.
El chorro de sangre es la poesía,
No hay como detenerlo.
Tú me entregas dos niños y dos rosas.
